BP decided to terminate my contract so I suddenly have a lot more time to train, although I have to fit it round some consulting work and additional Asda shifts.
I did my first full week since February, and then immediately did a second full week. The pool is warm enough now that I can get in whenever I can find the time and energy. And I am getting out on the bike much more and still running every day. I actually did double my bike and run miles while being spot on my targets for everything else.
It is still hard to tell what value the pool gives as there is no way to measure distance or speed and I am basically just guessing that the pace I am going is an easy 2min/100m. I tried to do a bit of a reps session in the middle of the second week, definitely felt harder during the fast bits, but no idea how much. Open water swimming seems to be legal now so hopefully some time in the next fortnight I will manage to get in a swim outdoors that I can compare to a previous year.
The extra time I have had on the bike means I have already caught up to my standard bike target. Not sure how long that will last though as I am getting bored out on the bike for hours on my own.
I am still running every day. That is working less well now that I am doing everything else and the fatigue build up is meaning very few of those runs are adding value.
Some time in the coming week I will pass my 2011 cumulative mileage again and will be well on my way to my longest running year ever. I have already passed my End of Year running totals from 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018. It is actually slightly scary that whilst writing that line, is the first time that I realised that I alternate between long and short running years. At this rate, next year could be a year off. A slightly closer look at the numbers, once you factor out my breakdown and broken ankle and it seems that I do a long year then a slightly shorter year, but in a two steps forward one step back, arrangement.
